How to clean and prepare your chain for a Wax treatment
Proper chain cleaning is the foundation of drivetrain performance. Before any wax or drip lubricant can deliver its full benefits, the chain must be completely free from factory grease, oil residue, and contamination. Using a dedicated drivetrain cleaner ensures consistent lubrication, extended component life, and maximum efficiency.
We recommend three effective chain cleaning methods, depending on your setup and level of precision.
On-bike spray cleaning
For quick and regular maintenance, the drivetrain cleaner can be applied directly to the chain using the spray nozzle while the chain remains on the bike. This method is ideal for removing surface contamination and maintaining cleanliness between deeper cleaning cycles.
Off-bike ultrasonic bath
For the most thorough clean, an ultrasonic bath provides professional-grade results. The chain is submerged in a heated drivetrain cleaner solution (approximately 60°C) and cleaned for 15 minutes. Ultrasonic cavitation penetrates deep between rollers and links, removing contamination that traditional methods cannot reach. This is the preferred method for first-time cleaning, race preparation, or heavily contaminated chains.
Off-bike shaker bath
The shaker method offers an excellent alternative when an ultrasonic cleaner is not available. The chain is placed in a sealed container with drivetrain cleaner and shaken vigorously for around 5 minutes. While not heated, this method still delivers highly effective deep cleaning and is easily accessible for home use.
Why should I shake the Drip bottle before applying?
Yes, using the spray nozzle method on the bike is quick and effective for routine cleaning.
Can I apply Drip on a dirty or oily chain?
Heating to around 60°C enhances cleaning efficiency but is not mandatory for the shaker method.
Is wiping off excess wax after application necessary?
The cleaner can be reused multiple times, but frequency depends on how dirty the chains cleaned are.
How often should I reapply the wax lubricant?
Residual degreaser can prevent effective wax adhesion and could cause drivetrain issues.
Is this product safe for the environment?
Drying removes moisture that can interfere with wax bonding and reduce the treatment’s longevity.
How to apply Drip for Road
Shake the bottle thoroughly before use.
For new chains or a first-time application, start with a fully clean and completely dry chain. Apply the Drip Road wax coating directly onto the chain rollers over the cassette while slowly rotating the cranks, ensuring the entire length of the chain is coated twice.
Next, apply the coating to the inside of the chain along the rollers on the lower chain span, again coating the full length of the chain twice. A complete initial application uses approximately 9 ml of product (or an 9 g difference by weight).
To ensure optimal penetration, continue rotating the cranks for 30 to 60 seconds, allowing the wax to fully work its way between the chain rollers and links. For best durability and the cleanest performance, allow the chain to dry overnight. Wiping excess wax from the chain surface is not recommended.
A proper application typically lasts up to 300 km / 180 miles in dry and clean riding conditions.
For standard reapplication, simply wipe off any surface dust with a clean cloth and reapply the coating to the chain links above the cassette, coating the entire length of the chain twice.
If the drivetrain has been contaminated, the bike has been washed, or ridden in wet conditions, a full clean and reapplication following the initial application procedure is recommended. For riders who frequently ride in wet conditions, a dedicated Wet Conditions formulation is advised.
Store the product away from direct sunlight and within a temperature range of 5–30°C (30–85°F).
Do not freeze.
How much Drip should I use for the first application?
Use approximately 8 grams on a fully cleaned and stripped chain for the best results.
Can I apply Drip to a dirty or oily chain?
No, always start with a clean, stripped chain. Use Drivetrain Cleaner to remove old lubricants and dirt.
How important is rotating the chain during application?
Very important. Slowly rotating the chain while applying ensures the wax penetrates all rollers and links evenly.
Do I need to wipe off excess wax after applying Drip?
No wiping is required. Let it dry overnight so the liquid carrier evaporates, leaving just wax.
What should I do if I regularly ride in wet conditions?
After wet rides, clean the chain with Drivetrain Cleaner and reapply the full wax coating to maintain protection.
How to apply Drip for Off-Road
Shake the bottle thoroughly before use.
For new chains or a first-time application, begin with a fully clean and completely dry chain. Apply the Drip Wet Conditions coating directly to the chain rollers over the cassette while slowly rotating the cranks, ensuring the entire length of the chain is coated twice.
Next, apply the coating to the inside of the chain along the rollers on the lower chain span, again coating the full length of the chain twice. A complete initial application uses approximately 8 ml of product (or an 8 g difference by weight).
To ensure optimal penetration, continue rotating the cranks for 30 to 60 seconds, allowing the coating to work its way between the chain rollers and links. For best durability and consistent performance, allow the chain to dry overnight. Wiping excess coating from the chain surface is not recommended.
After riding in wet conditions, it is strongly recommended to clean the chain and reapply a fresh coating to restore optimal protection and performance. If the ride was dry, simply wipe off any surface dust with a clean cloth and reapply the coating to the chain links above the cassette, coating the entire length of the chain twice.
Store the product away from direct sunlight and within a temperature range of 5–30°C (30–85°F).
Do not freeze.
Why should I shake the Drip bottle before applying?
Shaking ensures the wax components are evenly mixed for consistent coating and performance.
Can I apply Drip on a dirty or oily chain?
No, for the best results, start with a clean, stripped chain. Use the UFO Drivetrain Cleaner if needed before application.
Is wiping off excess wax after application necessary?
No, you should let the wax dry overnight and do not wipe off; the surface wax helps protect during rides.
How often should I reapply the wax lubricant?
Apply a fresh coating after any wet ride or full washing, and you can top off small amounts between dry rides as needed.
Is this product safe for the environment?
Yes, it is non-toxic and biodegradable, making it environmentally friendly.
